The launch webinar for the new We Are One Humanity was held on October 2, 2024. Over 200 people participated from all over the world. Rajmohan Gandhi delivered a short talk, which was followed by questions and comments. The event was hosted by Margaret Eastman Smith. In her opening remarks, Margaret said:

I want to welcome you to this inaugural webinar to honor the launch of We Are One Humanity.

My name is Margaret Eastman Smith, and I am a board member of We Are One Humanity. I am also a writer and a former professor of international relations at American University in Washington, DC. I am a long time friend of Rajmohan Gandhi and I will be your MC for this event.

We Are One Humanity is an NGO whose activities are wholly found on the website being launched today. It provides an opportunity for voices from around the globe to speak out for the values of trust, equality, friendship, fairness, mutual respect, human rights, and democracy that we hold to be sacred.

Rajmohan Gandhi, historian and professor and champion of causes of global peacemaking, is the inaugurator of this endeavor. The purpose of this gathering is to hear from Rajmohan about his vision and hopes for the project.

As some of you are well aware, today is the 155th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. It is also the sixtieth anniversary of the launching of a weekly newspaper called Himmat – the word means “courage” in Hindi – that Rajmohan started back in 1964. Though the newspaper eventually reached the end of its natural life, Rajmohan has continued to use the name for a blogsite where he has published his reflections about our changing world. We Are One Humanity is an expansion of the Himmat blogsite, designed to widen the range of contributors and speak more directly to the devastatingly urgent needs of our planet in 2024. Choosing this day to bring We Are One Humanity into the world is a way to acknowledge the Gandhian heritage of humanity, inclusiveness, truth and sacrifice that has been a particular feature of Rajmohan’s life and has been an inspiration to us all in our lives.
